Some time back we were approached by our Singaporean connection, X-SpeeD's Geoffrey Seek - otherwise known as "Boomtown Charlie" - to develop a top-end package for a Lancer Evo6.
This request was born from Geoff's desire to kick butt on the regional race tracks. Thing is, with just 160 kW (217hp) at the wheels - way down on the power produced by some local Godzillas - the car needed a major power injection.
We started by looking at the cars Link computer tunability, and ended up with quite a reasonable improvement of 175 kW (238hp). After removing and tearing down the engine, we fitted HPC coated Ralliart forged pistons, rings and bearings, Argo H-beam rods and bolts, our own vernier cam wheels, heavy valve springs and titanium retainers.
The exterior benefited from a hybrid Garrett ball bearing turbo, AVO BOV, fabricated ceramic coated manifold, and a full 3-inch mandrel bent system. Custom intercooler piping and a monster front-mount intercooler with a 600 horsepower core fronted the engine.
Once back on the dyno we found an astounding 220 kW (300hp) at the wheel, but also discovered a fuel system that simply couldnt cope. But this was easily fixed with larger Bosch 356 injectors, a custom 5-litre surge tank, and much larger Bosch fuel pump for an immediate improvement of 230 kW (312hp). We then tried vernier cam wheel adjustment for another 10 kW and a final wheel figure of 246 wheel kilowatts (335hp) at 22 psi boost.
Our G-Tech revealed an astonishing 11.5 @ 124 mph!
Equipped with a fast car, Geoff was ready to try his luck at an organised 1/8th mile drag race against the renowned JUN 2.2 litre Evo6. Unfortunately, plans dont always work out, and in the days leading up to the event with Terry and a new EBC on board, the crank broke with the boost wound up to 1.8 bar. I don't mind admitting that it really didnt bother us . In fact, when chatting to the JUN engineers, they advised that the only reason they had gone to 2.2-litres, was because they kept breaking cranks at high boost.
That they had to go with a new billet crank , they decided to up the capacity, said Terry.
