2009 HyperRev Tsukuba Super Battle at Tsukuba Circuit
This is basically the wrap up to the year in motorsports within Japan, the big last time attack. And the AVO widebody STI is entered this year, going toe to toe with the hottest tuner cars throughout Japan. Not just Subaru's and Evo's, this is against everything - Skyline GT-R's from the R32 to present, S2000's, Silvia's. The Works.
We've got a couple of tricks up our sleeve for this contest. One is over 500 ft/lbs of torque. Way over, to be exact. The other is Yoshihiro Yoshida, Prova's ace driver.
December 8th practice of one hour went well. The car was dialed in, and there was plenty of power. Because it was only for practice, we ran on the Hankooks from last year. For the actual event, we will switch to Yokohama 050 S tyres, which are much grippier. Even though this was just a practice day on less than optimal tyres, the driver Yoshida-san ended up pulling a 1.00.008 second lap time! That would have placed us third of Subaru's in last year's competition.
Dec 9th update: We are already running a 59.8 second lap!! Right out of the gate in early practice on the Yokohama's, Yoshida-san pulled out a blistering lap. We've already hit one of our goals, breaking the 1 minute barrier at Tsukuba circuit, and the actual time attack hasn't even started.
Later in the practice the time was improved upon, with a 59.47 second lap. As the tyres get warmed up, the car's going faster and faster.
Car has gone through weigh-in, and weighs 1298kg without driver. Would like to get some more weight out of it for next year.
Final update - our best time was a 59.34sec pass, 202km/h (126.25mph) on the back straight.
At the end of the day, AVO's STI was the 2nd fastest Impreza at the event. And if you consider that the fastest Impreza was a purpose built race car with little resemblance to a street car, the AVO STI with glass windows, standard steel body and 4 steel doors, weighing in at 1298kg did downright fantastic.
And next year, we will do better!
AVO Japan would like to it's sponsors:
Cosworth USA for building a flawless engine that's run 4 years without being opened up once through many race events.
LINK Engine Management for their ECU Standalone technology.
DBA Brake Rotors Australia for their no-fade no-judder braking system that has performed outstandingly every time.
