Saturday dawned bright and early for everybody... but us. After two days of solid driving and cursing at maps, we had found a hotel willing to let a dusty Australian and American in the front door. Yet another clue that we were definitely in Kalifornia was the front lady asking Ross and I if we "wanted one bed, or two?". Ah, two please... After some time in the pool, we were out like a light till about 9am Saturday.
One thing we quickly learned about Bakersfield was to not get breakfast in Bakersfield. So we just lit out of there, went up route 58 to Mojave, and finally arrived at Willowsprings Raceway.
On the way, we discovered that California is so hot, they have to use real large fans to cool it down.
After we tracked down Ryan Douhit, we figured out our place in the Subiefest universe, and started getting set up. We had been planning for Sunday being the main day, but quite a few people were already there on the Saturday. Subaru even had a great little event going, allowing people to drive around the track once in a WRX or WRX STI - for free!
Needless to say, I was soon found in a WRX. I have to admit that, while quick enough around the circuit, they are a bit numb for my tastes. Rallitek's WRX is much better setup for doing some quick track driving, but I have a feeling Sean would be a bit miffed if I took it out. So I had to be content with getting on Willow Springs for the first time!
It's a good fast track, mostly 2nd/3rd gear corners with a small back straight. As the track pro said, one lap is like a video game, just long enough to make you want more. I will have to see if I can get out in an STI tomorrow.
There is a party going on at the track tonight, we might have to check it out!
